Tubbs Bottom

A varied walk across fields with fine views to the west and visiting Chill Wood a piece of ancient woodland with visible remains of ancient mining activity. Cross the River Frome at Tubbs Bottom weir which was built to prevent flooding lower down the river.

START opposite Café on corner of Church Rd & Frampton End Rd (nearly opposite Primary School's field).

  1. Walk along Frampton End Rd for about 500 metres, beyond houses.

  2. At first sharp right bend (with Hover’s Lane on your left), go through kissing gate straight ahead into field.

  3. Walk ahead on trodden path to follow left hand edge of field for a while and then go through kissing gate in far corner.

  4. Turn right into crop field and follow trodden path along right edge of field and then cut across to the left of the earth mound to go through kissing gate ahead.

  5. Continue on trodden footpath to go over stile, continue over 2nd stile and then diagonally to go over 3rd stile beside house and beside hedge of tall trees.

  6. Walk ahead about 30metres to turn Left into Frampton End Rd.

  7. Continue downhill, over bridge, uphill past Algars Manor and the old railway station (now a house).

  8. Just before end of road (& green triangle), Turn Right over stone stile and follow path to playing field.

  9. Continue straight across field, heading toward the church, St James the Less, and looking for stile (usually hidden in hedge)

  10. Over stile, follow path over 2nd stile and under church tunnel (MIND HEAD!)

  11. At end, Turn Right to pass cemetery and exit via squeeze gate.

  12. Continue along alley that is bounded by wall & high fence but LOOK for STILE on Right (perhaps about 80 metres along).

  13. Over stile to follow trodden path down field, past large oak tree, through kissing gate amongst bushes (often muddy; edge of Robins Wood) and up steep steps to railway.

  14. CAREFULLY cross railway and go down steps on other side.

  15. Turn immediately Right and head for farm gate to go through gap or over stile.

  16. Turn immediately Left into Chill Woods, keeping left and taking 2nd trodden narrower path on Left (avoid uphill slope to right which would bring you on top of cave & mean a steep downhill bit)

  17. Follow this path through woods, passing a little cave on right and opening out onto open grass.

  18. Go over the R Frome bridge at Tubbs Bottom Weir and turn immediately Left. (Diversion if flooded at Tubbs Bottom Farm: Turn Right instead of left and follow path to end. Over stile & Left into Frampton End Rd. Either turn 1st right & retrace steps across fields or follow road back to café)

  19. Look for kissing gate on Right amongst trees; go through this and turn left.

  20. Follow path and through another kissing gate into field with pylons.

  21. Follow trodden path ahead, round edge of field to gateway in far corner (diagonally opposite last kissing gate)

  22. Go through this gateway and follow edge of field to Right, LOOKING for KISSING GATE (usually overgrown) at corner. Go through gate and follow path to road near Tubbs Farm buildings. (If you miss gate, take next exit from field and turn left onto this path)

  23. Turn Right into road and continue to end.

  24. At T junction, turn Left into Frampton End Road.

  25. As road bends sharply to right, go straight ahead into field. Walk ahead on trodden path.

  26. Over stile, along shaded alley and over another stile.

  27. Continue along edge of field (behind houses) and take 2nd footpath on Right. (1st footpath is also OK)

  28. Turn Left into Frampton End Road and continue to Café at end – TAKE CARE crossing Church Rd.
